Hand Hewn Logs

Authentic pioneer log cabins are carefully tagged and dismantled to be reassembled as a new home or cabin with unique rustic charm.  Many original log cabins are quite small compared to today's standards so when a project calls for a large cabin we custom-cut and build the cabin using logs from multiple small cabins.  When parts of an existing cabin are damaged or rotted, the salvageable logs are used either as replacements in another cabin or as log skin siding to give your project a one-of-a-kind finish.

Pioneer Hand-Hewn Log Packages
Our log cabins are sold as part of a package when we are contracted to construct the cabin on-site or pre-assemble it in our shop.  Hand-hewn logs are generally 6-8" thick with face heights ranging in size from 8-16" and lengths from 6' up to 20'.  The edges (top and bottom) are round and sometimes they'll even have bark from the tree they were cut from!   The patina is typically the original white-washed surface with a significant amount of hewing.  If a customer prefers to have the original patina removed we can either pressure-wash and/or plane the logs.
Available species include oak, ash, elm and pine but can vary depending on what part of Minnesota we have reclaimed the log from.  Normally a vintage cabin or a cabin newly created using hand-hewn logs is built with multiple species.
Lead Time
Because of the custom nature of log packages, a lead time is given only after the drawings and specifications are reviewed.

Hand-Hewn Log Skins (Siding)
As with the hand-hewn logs, our skins generally have a face height ranging in height from 8-16".  Log siding is cut at 2" thick +/- 1/4" unless otherwise specified.
Lead Time
We require 2 weeks to prep the logs and 1 additional work day per 500 square feet for milling.
